This August 5th, I am in my parlor, at home but not at home. If I had paper, I’d draw you a card and if we were at Pennsic, I’d try to be a bard (That rhyme was awful, and I hope you don’t mind because I’m trying to write this for St. Valentine’s!) In the dim lamplight of our one-bedroom apartment she crouched, her back turned defiantly to the single bare bulb by our bedside. Her silhouette was just barely enough to shield my sleepy eyes from the startled flare of light and the clock-face half-hidden by her hip read six – I assumed it was A.M. The black shock of hair that fell around her face seemed frosted by light on all its brittle edges. She’d turned the AC on full blast again.
